PUTRAJAYA, June 16 – The price of chicken is expected to rise next month when it floats after the end of the maximum retail price system on June 30.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that following the possibility of higher chicken prices, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) is planning to provide assistance to the needy who would be finalized by the end of this month.
“MOF will do something to help those in need,” he said at a press conference after the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) monthly assembly here today.
The government sets the maximum retail price for standard chicken at RM8.90 per kilogram and super chicken (slaughtered and cleaned without legs, head, liver and gizzard) at RM9.90 per kg.
Earlier, chicken farmers expressed hope that the government will allow chicken prices to float freely following its decision to end subsidies to farmers from July 1.
Meanwhile, Nanta reminded industry players not to take advantage of the floating price by arbitrarily raising the price of chicken.
He said the KPDNHEP would also monitor the price aspect and if necessary use the power of the Price Control and Profit Control Act 2011 (AKHAP) against errant traders.
“I hope industry players don’t take advantage of this and raise the price too much. We will accept if reasonably done as we all know the cost of running has increased,” he said. — Bernama
